The engine is the single biggest driver of a zero-turn mower’s price and long-term reliability, but spec sheets rarely explain what the numbers actually mean for how the mower performs in your yard.
How Much Horsepower Do You Actually Need
Roughly matching horsepower to deck size keeps the engine from bogging down in thick or tall grass. Smaller decks typically pair with lower horsepower, while larger decks need more power to keep blade tip speed consistent across a wider cut. More horsepower than your deck needs mostly adds cost and fuel use rather than better cutting.
V-Twin vs. Single Cylinder
V-twin engines run smoother, generate less vibration, and generally last longer under sustained load, which is why most mid-size and larger zero-turns use them. Single-cylinder engines are lighter and less expensive, and are more common on smaller or entry-level machines.
Kawasaki
Known for the FR and FX series used across many premium zero-turns, with a reputation for durability and consistent power delivery under commercial-level use.
Kohler
Common on both residential and commercial decks, known for an accessible parts and service network, with engines spanning entry-level options up through Command PRO commercial-grade models.
Briggs & Stratton
Widely used across the broadest range of price points, from homeowner models up through their Commercial Series and Vanguard engines built for daily commercial use.
Fuel Considerations
All three brands offer both carbureted and EFI (fuel-injected) options. EFI costs more upfront but typically starts easier in cold weather and uses less fuel over a season of regular mowing.
